Nestled in the southeastern corner of Montgomery County, New York, Charleston is a community of approximately 1,200 residents. We are a rural area situated 30 minutes from the cities of Amsterdam and Schenectady and 45 minutes from the state capital of Albany, NY. The nearby interstate systems of I-88 and I-90 makes getting to the larger cities very easy.
The Town of Charleston includes the hamlets of Burtonville, Charleston Four Corners, Oak Ridge and Rockwell Corners. The Town of Charleston is on the south border of Montgomery County and is the only town in the county not bordering the Mohawk River.
Charleston is fortunate to have in it’s boundaries over 4,000 acres of state and county forests dedicated to providing great hunting, fishing, hiking, x-country skiing, horseback riding and snowmobiling on well maintained trail systems.
Our town board and employees work very hard to provide a well maintained highway system to insure safe travel for our school buses and residents.
Property values have remained strong despite lower valuations elsewhere in the state. This is due in part to the higher elevations, views, services offered and friendly atmosphere experienced by those who visit and decide to live here.
With the strong growth of industry at Global Foundries in nearby Malta, and the Nano Tech Centers in Albany, Charleston provides a quiet setting and close proximity to living near these technology hubs.

The Memorial Day Parade, Ceremony of Remembrance, Community Cookout, Children's Carnival, Make-Your-Own Ice Cream Sundaes, and Fireworks Display in Charleston Four Corners will be held on Monday, May 26th. The Children’s Parade will begin at 4:00pm and the regular parade will immediately follow. Everyone is welcome to attend and/or participate in the parades on E. Lykers Rd. beginning at the Charleston Volunteer Firehouse and ending just passed the The Christian Church of Charleston Four Corners. There will be no cost involved with the Community Picnic and Children’s Carnival as the church is sponsoring them.
Children can participate in the Children’s Parade by walking, riding their bicycles, riding on their ponies, driving their battery operated four wheelers, or in any other way their parents approve. If they would like to enter a pet or walk a farm animal down the parade route, they are welcome to do that also.
Adults can enter tractors, trucks, antique vehicles, equipment, animals, floats, or participate in the parade in any other way they would like. Organizations, businesses, clubs, churches and charities are encouraged to get involved, and we encourage you to toss candy along the parade route!
Parade participants are asked to text/call (561) 926-8803 or send an email to Brettmpopp@gmail to let the parade planning committee know you would like to participate. Horse trailer parking will be available down at the Charleston Church parking lot. Parade participants can begin assembling at the Charleston Volunteer Firehouse at 3:30pm.
The Town of Charleston Board Members along with the Charleston Volunteer Fire Department and the Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department will be sponsoring a great Fireworks Display at 8:45pm and you will not want to miss it! Just follow the parking signs at the Charleston Four Corners intersection to know where to park. There will also be limited parking available at the Charleston Church.
The 2025 Memorial Day Parade planning committee hopes to see you all in Charleston Four Corners on Memorial Day for this exciting community and family event! Come and be a part of our little town’s BIG Parade!
4/2/2025: Youth Sports Assistance Program is back for 2025!
The Town of Charleston, NY has received word from the Montgomery County Youth Bureau that we can continue our Youth Sports Assistance Program in 2025. Last year, this program provided support for the youth of the Town of Charleston to participate in outdoor activities and youth sports.
The opportunity is limited to one per family. The Town will directly pay for enrollment in a sports league or lessons, including swim lessons, for any youth residing in the Town of Charleston.
To apply, you MUST make arrangements in advance with the sponsoring organization and the Town will pay that organization directly. We are not able to reimburse individual families. If you know that you wish to enroll your child in an opportunity, please contact the youth commission well in advance of the sign up deadline.
We already have a relationship with 4everbods Fitness in Delanson and they will contact the Town if you identify yourself as a town resident upon registering.
